All-Electronic Tolling Coming to the Henry Hudson Bridge
In "Making Every Dollar Count," a recently released report that includes an assessment of the MTA and plans for improvement, two major initiatives for Bridges and Tunnels were unveiled: a pilot of all-electronic tolling (AET) within the existing toll plaza at the Henry Hudson Bridge, and a pilot for a new payment method for customers who prefer to use cash to refill their E-ZPass accounts.
The information gathered from the test program at the Henry Hudson will be used to determine how feasible and how well the technology works under current traffic operating conditions.
The Henry Hudson Bridge opened to traffic on December 12, 1936. The bridge has a high E-ZPass market share (preliminary 2009 daily average market share is 82 % vs. agency-wide 73.6%); the plaza and connecting roadways are relatively simple in design, and there is no truck traffic. Approximately 62,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily.
In an effort to boost B&T's E-ZPass market share, reduce the use of cash toll lanes and improve traffic flow on the toll plaza, the second initiative will focus on making E-ZPass more attractive to cash customers. Customers would be able to deposit cash into their E-ZPass accounts by using automatic teller machines (ATMs) or other convenient payment outlets. This gives E-ZPass users more control over their accounts, along with the convenience of adding funds at more locations throughout the City.
Both initiatives highlight the MTA's commitment to find affordable ways to improve service for customers who have been waiting far too long while ensuring that every dollar is being used as effectively as possible.
