East Side Access Work: Summer 2013 Service Changes

LIRR Train

Monday, July 22 through Friday, August 16.

  • Three westbound AM Peak trains (Babylon, Port Washington, Ronkonkoma) will be canceled
  • Two westbound AM Peak trains to Hunterspoint Avenue/Long Island City will terminate at Jamaica Station
  • Two eastbound PM Peak Babylon Branch trains will be canceled
  • Two eastbound PM Peak trains from Long Island City/Hunterspoint Avenue will originate at Jamaica Station
  • Some trains will have 1-2 minutes added to their running time

Here is what will be happening:
A month-long construction initiative to support the East Side Access project will take place this summer, and will impact weekday service from mid-July through mid-August. We are building a concrete track slab in the very busy Harold Interlocking that will allow subsequent tunnel construction to proceed without impacting LIRR service. Eventually, the slab will support a westbound bypass track for Amtrak and LIRR trains, increasing capacity and reliability in this area.

To accommodate the work, some key tracks in the Harold Interlocking area will be taken out of service. On weekdays, service impacts include the temporary cancellation of three westbound AM peak trains and two eastbound PM peak trains, along with schedule revisions for a number of other trains. The cancellations and timetable changes will be in effect from Monday, July 22 through Friday, August 16.
