Reconstruction Complete Following Hudson Line Freight Derailment at Spuyten Duyvil

Metro-North’s Hudson Line reconstruction effort following the July 18 derailment of a CSX freight train in the vicinity of Spuyten Duyvil has been completed. Last weekend, crews made significant progress in rebuilding 1,500 feet of damaged track. Metro-North was able to operate regular peak and midday train service since Monday July 22, when one of the two tracks in the area was placed back in service. Overnight and on weekends, a bus program was in place to shuttle customers around the work area to expedite progress. The second track was returned to service late on the night of Monday July 29, in time for Tuesday morning's commute, providing full operating capacity on the Hudson Line for the first time since the derailment.

Metro-North would like to extend its gratitude to its Hudson Line customers for their patience during the recovery and kudos to the incredible and determined efforts of all its employees who worked from the start to remove 10 CSX freight train cars (carrying New York City municipal trash) that derailed in a two-track area near Spuyten Duyvil, and then to rebuild damaged track.

It was a particularly difficult job because of the extreme hot weather and the fact that it occurred in an area bordered by high rock walls, presenting Metro-North and New York City Transit employees working on the scene with many challenges.  This constrained site often meant painstaking repositioning of debris removal equipment, cranes, backhoes, front-end loaders and the like - a labor intensive process requiring many hours of work in grueling heat and humidity.

While the work was ongoing, many other railroad employees rallied in support roles--keeping customers informed through the web, email alerts, social media, at train stations and bus shuttle points; creating the best possible train/bus schedule alternatives to provide as much service as possible, minimizing the impact on customers during this period.  Other employees also worked intensively to ensure that rescue and repair equipment as well as regular train equipment and crews were at the ready.

Metro-North also greatly appreciates the cooperation of local municipalities, their police departments, and MTA Bus in providing support during the shuttle bus operation on weekends and late nights, which expedited the ability of railroad workers to remove the disturbed cargo, derailed freight cars and rebuild damaged track.
