Special Day for Special Kids at the New York Transit Museum
The third annual Special Day for Special Kids will take place on Sunday, September 15th at the New York Transit Museum, with free admission and exciting programs for children with special needs/disabilities and their families, from 10 am to 2 pm. This popular event is all about embracing special needs families in a cultural environment where they feel welcome and wanted. The museum is located in a decommissioned subway station at Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
Science demonstrations, art projects and musical performances will be offered all morning, and special needs families will have exclusive use of the Museum from 10 am to 11 am, before it opens to the general public at 11 am.
From 10 am to 2 pm, Costumed Interpreter Paula will bring transit history to life, greeting visitors in a working signal tower on the Museum’s platform level. Extreme Kids & Crew will lead art projects in the Education Center from 10:15 to 11:15 am, and at 11:30, a Transit Museum educator will present “ElectriCity Live,” an exciting 20-minute science demonstration in the Screening Room. The highlight of the day will be a musical performance from the M Shanghai String Band at noon, a concert that is sure to bring out all the dancers in the house.
NOTE: The Transit Museum wheelchair lift is currently being repaired, and may not be operational for the event. Please call (718) 694-1823 in advance for assistance and updates.
Extreme Kids & Crew combats the stress and isolation faced by children with disabilities and their families through play, arts and movement programming, partnerships with cultural and therapeutic institutions, parent meet-ups and more. For more information, visit www.extremekidsandcrew.org.
Transit Museum family programs are supported by the Barclays/Nets Community Alliance and City Council Members David Greenfield, Letitia James, Brad Lander and Stephen Levin.
The Transit Museum also offers Subway Sleuths, an acclaimed social skill-building afterschool program for 7-11 year olds on the autism spectrum.
