The Infrastructures and Facilities Program manages a $4 billion capital program
involving design and construction of: line structure rehabilitations; Department
of Subways’ facilities; line equipment; shop and yard facilities; fan plants
and electrical facilities.
Responsibilities:
The candidate will assist a Design Manager in the delivery of designs for
capital projects. The design management staff helps to create a unified
design vision while ensuring that projects adhere to standards and guidelines,
and operating department requirements. Student responsibilities will include:
- Assist in the development of project scope of work and planning
- Help to prepare and monitor project budgets, and labor force accounts
- Assist in the coordination between multiple design disciplines
- Assist in field investigations and research
- Coordinate with Construction Manager’s office for input on constructability and phasing of projects
- Assist in permit and approval process with other agencies
- Assist in procurement process
Special Qualifications or Background Needed:
Ideal candidates will be Graduate Students majoring in the fields of infrastructure,
architecture, or structural engineering, with an undergraduate degree in
a related field. Or, candidates may be graduate students majoring in public
administration with an undergraduate degree in architecture of engineering.

The Maintenance Planning group serves as the technology assistance/identifier,
maintenance planning, and problem solving services to the Division of Track
that is responsible for maintenance, construction and inspection of over
840 miles of mainline, yard and lay-up tracks on the elevated, at-grade
and subway structures. The group also works with field personnel to maintain
consistent records of track inspection and repair to improve the structural
integrity and safety of MTA/NYCT’s transportation system.
Responsibilities:
Maintenance of Way, Track Maintenance Planning, is tasked with the automation
of track inspection data collection, track complaint and repair processes.
One application entitled IRIS (Integrated Railway Inspection System) out
of several has been developed to simplify administration of track infrastructure
defect program. Interns will primarily be tasked with Quality Assurance
(Q/A) testing of IRIS functionality, data extraction and analysis, ongoing
research on Pictorial Inspection System and geocoding of defect location
data using GPS/CAD/GIS.
Special Qualifications or Background Needed:
Multidisciplinary knowledge in information systems, statistics, civil engineering,
and geography. Knowledge of MS Access, SQL, Excel and Word would be beneficial.
Interest in learning track construction specifications, maintenance standards,
inspection strategies, spatial statistics using GIS/GPS tools are a necessity

The 240th St. Maintenance Shop is one of four subway car maintenance shops
that make up the Northern Division West Side Lines. The cars maintained
there were built from 1985 – 1987. The personnel that keep these cars in
revenue service make up many titles and responsibilities. The Administration
Office for the shop is responsible for keeping the personnel records for
the shop while monitoring some of the employee mandated programs.
Responsibilities:
The maintenance shops are responsible for keeping the trains running safely
and free from defect. The student will perform basic administrative duties
and computer-related tasks related to the Division’s function.

The end product will be a written memorandum on the findings, analysis, and recommendations of on-time-performance management for the #4 line. Overview of Dept/Division: Reporting to the Office of the Executive Vice President, Technology & Information Services (TIS) provides a broad range of information technology services to all of New York City Transit.
Responsibilities: GIS is a pictorial representation of geographic data. NYC Transit is committed to developing an accurate GIS database for internal use as well as collaborating with various city-wide efforts to implement a NYC map with a high level of accuracy. The intern will be expected to assist the GIS group in several areas: 1) identifying, categorizing, data cleaning and cross-referencing CAD, GIS and other asset sources for NYCT and the NYC GIS project databases to determine the interrelationships of key transit infrastructure objects and spatial features to each other and to various GIS representations of the same object; 2) developing table layers of a GIS map database; 3) creating specialty maps and map portfolios for use by non-GIS clients to perform quality control examinations of data through spatial formats and displays; 4) system testing and documentation.

The Operations Analysis Intern will undertake one or more in-depth analyses of a specific aspect of subway operations, such as on-time performance or the regularity of train service, for a single line or a group of lines. Tasks can cover the full range of an operations analysis, from data collection through data entry to statistical analysis and development of recommendations. While some of the data collection will involve the use of available systems resources, much will require directly observing train operations.
