In the event of an emergency that requires evacuating a train, MTA New York City Transit needs you to follow some simple rules to facilitate getting you to a safe place. Remeber that your best protection is to remain calm, think clearly, and follow the instructions of the train crew.

Always contact a train crew member and listen for announcements.

Do Not Pull the Emergency Brake Cord	Use the emergency brake cord only when the motion of the subway presents an imminent danger to life and limb. Otherwise, do not activate the emergency brake cord, especially in a tunnel. Once the emergency brake cord is pulled, the brakes have to be reset before the train can move again, which reduces the options for dealing with the emergency.
Stop	Stay calm and don't attempt to leave the train on your own. In most circumstances that is the most dangerous thing you can do. Tracks may still be electrified; other trains may still be in motion around you. If you can't stay in the car you are on, if possible walk calmly to another car that is unaffected by the emergency. Don't try to leave the train without instructions or help from the train crew, other Transit employees, and emergency services workers. The safest place for you is on the train.
Look	If there is an emergency, look for a member of the subway crew and report it immediately. The sooner we know about an emergency the sooner we can act to bring the situation under control. On our newest cars two-way intercom systems are located at the ends of cars.
Listen	It is important that you follow the instructions of our subway crews, other Transit employees, and rescue, fire, or police personnel on the scene. The train crew will keep you informed about the emergency either in person or through the subway's public address system. Stay calm; in most instances all you need to do to be safe is to move to another car on the same train. If an evacuation is necessary crew members, other Transit employees, and emergency service workers will help you exit the train quickly and safely.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

In the event of an emergency, it may become necessary to evacuate the train you are riding on. Remember to listen to the instructions given by train crews or other emergency responders who will tell you what to do. There are four ways you may be evacuated from a train to a safe area.

Train to Benchwall The train crew and other emergency personnel will assist you to the area of the tracks adjacent to the train known as the Benchwall and lead you to an Emergency Exit or station platform (see figure 1).	figure 1
Transfer to a train ahead or behind Train crews and other emergency personnel will assist you in transferring from the train you were riding to another train that has pulled up ahead or behind (see figure 2).	figure 2
Transfer to a train along side Train crews and other emergency personnel will assist you from the train you were riding to another train that has pulled up along side. A device will be placed to enable you to move directly into the other train (see figure 3).	figure 3
Evacuating to the trackbed Once power is removed, train crews and other emergency personnel will assist you in evacuating to the trackbed and leading you safely to an Emergency Exit or station platform (see figure 4).	figure 4
