A New Way to Pay: BEFORE you Board

Pay your fare at a fare collection machine at the bus stop
There are two types of fare collection machines at bus stops accept fares and issue receipts. One is the MetroCard Fare Collector and the other is the Coin Fare Collector. You MUST pay at ONE of these machines and get a proof-of-payment receipt before boarding the bus.

1. MetroCard Fare Collector

  1. Insert your fare card face up into the slot.
  2. Your receipt will be issued automatically.
Transfers: MetroCard transfers remain the same. Your transfer is encoded on your card.

If you are using Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard to pay for more than one person, insert the card into the machine up to four times, payment receipts (maximum of four) will be issued for each member of the group.

If your group is using Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard to transfer to Select Bus Service, insert the MetroCard once, and mutiple receipts will be issued for each member of the group.

2. Coin Fare Collector
Pay here with coins, exact change ONLY

  1. Insert $2.25 in coins, exact change ONLY
  2. Your receipt will be issued automatically.
Reduced-Fare Customers and Half-Fare Student MetroCard users:

  1. Press yellow button first
  2. Insert $1.10 in coins, exact change ONLY
  3. Your receipt will be issued automatically.
Transfers: Board at the front of the bus and request a transfer from the bus operator.

To CANCEL the transaction, turn the red knob before you finish depositing your last coin.

Neither machine sells or refills MetroCard; they are not vending machines, and do not make change.

Keep your receipt for the duration of your trip
You must keep your proof-of-payment receipt for the duration of your trip. Fare inspectors randomly check for them. Anyone who cannot produce a valid receipt could be subject to a substantial fine or even imprisonment.

You don't give or show your receipt to the bus operator UNLESS you paid with coins and need a transfer. Please board at the front of the bus if you need a transfer.

Your receipt can only be used for Select Bus Service
Proof-of-payment receipts cannot be used to board any other bus. They are valid for Select Bus Service only.

Your UniTicket or Return-Trip ticket serves as a receipt
Just board the bus. You don't need to get a receipt from the fare collector machines. Your MTA Metro-North Railroad UniTicket or MTA NYC Transit Return-Trip Ticket serves as a receipt. Just show your ticket to a fare inspector upon request.
