Weekend Work October 19 - 22, 2012

During this weekend's shutdown between Queensboro Plaza and Times Sq-42 St, our maintenance workers and contractors accomplished several tasks as part of work taking place on the 7 line icon Line:

Signal System Modernization CBTC, Flushing Line

The contractor performed work associated with modernizing the signal system on the Flushing line. This line will be equipped with a modern Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system. The work over the last weekend included installation of equipment along the subway line, pulling 47,770 feet of fiber optic and line cables, installing a cable tray and negative track conduits.

Queensboro Plaza Capital Track Program

On the Manhattan-bound track just past the Queensboro Plaza station, Division of Track personnel replaced six crossties, four third rail crossties, 35 pieces of wood slatting, 30 tie plates, and ten elevation blocks. Workers also regauged 50 feet of track at three locations and delivered garbage housing units via work trains to the Manhattan-bound and Main Street-bound platforms at Court Sq station. Just before Queensboro Plaza on the Manhattan-bound track, crews replaced 12 sections of track and 60 tie plates and cleaned the track at Queensboro Plaza.

7 line icon Line Extension

A 50 linear feet concrete wall was constructed between the tracks near the Times Square-42 St station, approximately 4,500 linear feet of communication cable was pulled into conduits and work on the installation of four conduits from a tunnel lighting room at the end of the platform at Times Sq-42 St toward the new tunnel took place.

Additional Work

In the Steinway Street Tunnel, that connects Queens to Manhattan, existing ducts are being demolished on the Queens-bound and Manhattan-bound sides. A new duct bank (a structure that houses cables) is being built for new cables that supplies traction (third rail) power for the 7 Line. More than 2000 feet of 2 1/2 inch conduit and 100 feet of 3 inch conduit was installed. Ten manifolds of air and water lines that covers 2,100 feet was also installed on the Manhattan-bound track.
