Line Weekend Work October 25-28, 2013
During the October 25-28 weekend shutdown of the Line between Queensboro Plaza and Times Sq-42 St, our maintenance workers and contractors accomplished several important tasks on multiple projects being performed on this vital link between Flushing, Queens and Midtown Manhattan.
Communications-Based Train Control
The contractor installed temporary tie-ins for upcoming in-service testing at Times Sq-42 St. Also, negative cables and signal cases were installed along the wayside and case stacks (3” pipes) were installed and cables were pulled.
Capital Track Program
This past weekend Track Maintenance forces completed tie block, tie plate and rail replacement at the Queensboro Plaza Station on the upper level (Main St-bound track). In addition, 326 tie blocks, 326 tie plates and 14 sections of rail were installed.
Twice-daily inspections and 14-day supervisory inspection of all tracks from the Queensboro Plaza Station to the Hunters Point Av Station was performed. Workers also adjusted/repaired 1,500 linear feet of flangeway on the sections of curved track near the Hunters Point Av Station. The flangeway, located on curved sections of track, is the two inch gap between the running rail and the inner or guard rail that is in place where the track bends.
In the Steinway Tunnel, workers installed 1,000 feet of concrete form work and poured concrete for the outer wall of the duct bank on the Queens-bound track. Also, 800 feet of 2000 MCM electrical cable was pulled into four ducts under the First Avenue Interlocking and a trial run of a “water leak” sealing agent was applied to 300 feet behind the new duct banks on the Manhattan-bound track.
