FASTRACK—MTA New York City Transit's intensive maintenance program continued its third night along the line in the Bronx between the 161 St-Yankee Stadium station and the 205 St station. The five-mile long Grand Concourse Line was shut down from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. suspending service in both directions. This FASTRACK line segment closure continues tonight and concludes at 5 a.m. Friday morning, July 19.
Stopping all train service on a subway corridor on four consecutive nights for seven continuous hours gives work crews a significant uninterrupted block of time to perform many tasks on or near the tracks without having to stop work every few minutes while a train moves through the area. This is a better work environment for employees and a more efficient way to perform maintenance and clean the North America’s largest rail transportation system.
When trains were not running on the more than 80-year old Grand Concourse Line, hundreds of maintenance workers were able to inspect signals and switches, repair and replace track rails and cross ties, clean track floors, perform elevator and escalator repair work, repair water damage, clear drains, and clean stations. They were also able to clear the track bed of debris and paint areas that are not reachable during normal train operation. In addition, work crews were able to clean lighting fixtures, change bulbs, and repair platform edges. Work crews also performed high-intensity station cleaning providing a visible improvement to the station environment.
Achievement by the Numbers
Major achievements from last night’s maintenance effort included servicing 47 signals and two switches, testing 53 signals and two switches and replacing two switch components. Keeping the tracks and the third rail in good condition is critical as work crews replaced six sections of track, 255 track tie plates, corrected 167 third rail defects and scraped and cleaned 5,115 linear feet of track under and around the third rail. Personnel also inspected 11,300 linear feet of the subway’s physical structure.
With an eye toward improving employee and customer safety, customer convenience and the appearance of the subway station environment, work crews scraped and painted 3,250 square feet of paintable surface and performed preventative maintenance on elevators and escalators. In addition, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems received attention as the picture was optimized on 12 monitors and 19 cameras.
The FASTRACK project environment, introduced in January 2012, has resulted in a significantly lower employee accident rate. During FASTRACK operations, the Lost Time Accident (LTA) rate per 100 Employees was 1.38 versus a rate of 2.42 during all other operations. An LTA is a job-related incident that results in the inability of an employee to perform their duties for at least one working day beyond the day of the incident.

Reliable service—service our customers depend on to get them where they need to go—requires regularly scheduled maintenance to the critical components they never see. FASTRACK is having a positive impact on service reliability as train delays on subway lines that have undergone FASTRACK maintenance have dropped 4.4% and track fires have declined by 50%. Overall, FASTRACK is improving employee safety and service reliability.
