Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge Enters New Stage of Deck Rehabilitation

The $56.9 million deck rehabilitation on the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge is moving to a new stage on October 9th with the closure of a northbound lane. Please note that two lanes will remain open during morning rush hours, although additional lane closures may occur intermittently during off-peak hours. The walkway will remain open to the public throughout this work period. One southbound lane is already closed for construction.

In addition, the northbound ramp toward Broad Channel at the intersection of Rockaway Freeway at Beach 94th Street, and the southbound ramp toward Riis Park-Beach Channel Drive West will be closed to traffic until the weekend before Memorial Day 2008. Appropriate local detours to the remaining three ramps will be implemented during these ramp closures. These detours have been carefully worked out with Community Board 14.

The three-year major project centers on reconstructing the 37-year old deck of the Cross Bay Bridge and its Rockaway ramps, which have weathered decades of use by 7.3 million vehicles each year in the corrosive salt water environment.
