Extra LIRR Service for New Year’s Weekend Starting With 13 Extra Eastbound Afternoon Departures for Early Friday Getaway
Also, More City-Bound Trains on New Year’s Eve, and Early Morning Eastbound Service on New Year’s Day to Ensure Travel Options for Late-Night Revelers

MTA Long Island Rail Road is ready to help customers ring in the New Year with extra train service for the extended holiday weekend, beginning with 13 additional eastbound trains to accommodate customers leaving work early on Friday, December 28, and again on Monday, December 31. The railroad will also run 21 additional westbound trains on Monday, New Year’s Eve, for revelers heading to the city to celebrate, as well as 19 extra service early in the morning on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2019, to get partygoers safely back home.

Over the New Year’s weekend, the railroad will operate on a weekend-holiday schedule with the usual ban on alcohol on trains and on station platforms from noon on New Year’s Eve until noon on New Year’s Day.

Friday, December 28, and Monday, December 31 – 13 Extra Eastbound Early Getaway Trains

The Long Island Rail Road is adding 13 trains to its eastbound afternoon schedule of departures from Penn Station on Friday, December 29, and again on Monday, December 31, to accommodate customers leaving work early on either day. The additional service will be provided between 12:46 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. on the Babylon, Far Rockaway, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma Branches.

Babylon Branch – 6 Extra Trains

  • 1:28 p.m. express to Rockville Centre, then local to Babylon
  • 1:56 p.m. express to Jamaica, stopping at Rockville Centre, then local to Babylon
  • 2:22 p.m. express to Rockville Centre, then local to Babylon
  • 2:32 p.m. express to Lynbrook, then local to Babylon
  • 3:00 p.m. stopping at Jamaica, Rockville Centre, then local to Babylon
  • 3:31 p.m. express to Rockville Centre, then local to Babylon

Far Rockaway Branch – 1 Extra Train

  • 3:48 p.m. stopping at Locust Manor, Laurelton, Rosedale, Valley Stream, then local to Far Rockaway.

Port Jefferson Branch – 3 Extra Trains

  • 2:08 p.m. stopping at Jamaica, Mineola, then local to Huntington
  • 2:29 p.m. stopping at Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Jamaica, New Hyde Park, then local to Huntington
  • 3:24 p.m. stopping at Jamaica, Mineola, Westbury and Hicksville

Port Washington Branch – 1 Extra Train

  • 3:40 p.m. stopping at Woodside, Flushing Main Street, then local to Great Neck.

Ronkonkoma Branch – 2 Extra Trains (No Pinelawn Stop)

New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31 – 21 Extra Westbound Trains

Those who plan to head to New York City to mark the arrival of 2019 or to attend the Post Malone/Lil Pump concert at Barclays Center that evening will find 21 extra trains added to the regular weekday schedule, with extra service on seven branches.

Babylon Branch – 5 Extra Trains

  • 5:45 p.m. from Babylon making local stops to Rockville Centre, then Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal
  • 6:20 p.m. from Babylon making local stops to Rockville Centre, then Jamaica and Penn Station
  • 7:24 p.m. from Freeport making local stops to Rockville Centre, then Jamaica and Penn Station
  • 8:09 p.m. from Babylon making local stops to Rockville Centre, then Jamaica and Penn Station

New Year’s Day, Monday, January 1, 2018 – 19 Extra AM Eastbound Trains

Between 12:35 a.m. and 4:20 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2019, a total of 19 extra eastbound trains will operate to accommodate customers heading home after celebrating the arrival of the New Year. For the remainder of the day, the LIRR will operate on a holiday/weekend schedule

Email and text message service updates – Customers are urged to sign up to receive the alerts by visiting MyMTAAlerts.com. To avoid unwanted messages, a user can tailor the messages to the specific branch, and the specific times of day.

MYmta app – Customers who use the new, comprehensive MYmta app will see real-time travel information for LIRR and connecting services all in one place. As a caution, trains that start out their trips on time may experience delays en route. The LIRR Train Time app also remains available for customers to access LIRR train information.

MTA.info – The rail tab of the “Service Status” box at the left side of www.MTA.info is always the definitive source for the latest status for each branch, updated every minute. In addition, customers can visit www.mta.info/lirr to see special service notices in the upper center of the page.

The above communications channels can be accessed while at home or on the go. For customers who are located at stations, the LIRR will post the latest service updates on digital signs at station platforms and will make audio announcements over public address systems, and on-board announcements made by train crews.
