MTA LIRR’s $40 Million Massapequa Station Platform & Elevator Project Enters Next Phase
Construction Work Will Require Temporary Changes in Access and Parking

The next segment of a $40 million facelift of the Massapequa Station gets underway Wednesday, August 21, 2013, as the LIRR continues the work it began in the spring on a two-year rehabilitation project of the station.

The LIRR is replacing the station platform, canopy, staircases, elevator and escalator as well as the platform waiting room, lighting, public address system and signage. The Railroad is also starting work on the installation of a pocket track just east of the station that will improve train service and frequency as well as on-board seat availability.

The project represents the biggest improvement effort at Massapequa Station since the station was raised from street level in 1953. The LIRR will carry out the work in three phases arranged to ensure that train service continues uninterrupted throughout the project, though some schedule changes may be necessary at times.

The newest phase (1B) of the Massapequa platform project is expected to continue through early spring 2014. Customers should expect the following during this phase of the work:

  • An additional section of the western half of the platform will be closed for demolition and reconstruction.
  • 6 cars will platform instead of the current 8 cars. Westbound customers will board the last six cars of their trains and eastbound customers will board/exit in the first six cars.
  • The ticket machines at Massapequa Station have been moved to the east underpass
  • Existing elevator will be closed and demolished, to make way for a new elevator.
  • The stairs adjacent to the Ticket Office will be closed
  • Customers can access the platform from the east underpass staircases
  • Handicapped parking along the south sidewalk will be relocated to the north side of the underpass.
  • 12 parking spaces will be temporarily used to accommodate the relocated handicapped spaces.
  • An additional 20 parking spaces adjacent to the south sidewalk will be temporarily used to accommodate the staging of construction materials/equipment.
  • Mobility impaired customers who require an elevator are advised to use Seaford Station or Bellmore Station for elevator access. Free unrestricted parking is available at the west end of Seaford Station.

All parking at Bellmore Station is free and unrestricted.

The LIRR is making every effort to complete this project with the least amount of inconvenience to riders, residents and businesses in the surrounding community.
