Metro-North Provides Extra Service for New Year’s Eve
Trains Run Round the Clock for Festivities

Riding Metro-North is the safe, convenient way to ring in 2019. The railroad has a special schedule in effect over the New Year’s Eve holiday, including trains operating “overnight” in the wee hours of New Year’s morning to get you safely home from New York City.

Metro-North reminds customers that drinking alcohol on trains and at our stations is banned from noon New Year's Eve until noon New Year’s Day. The railroad encourages customers traveling to New York to purchase round-trip tickets before boarding Grand Central Terminal bound trains. On the night of New Year’s Eve, tickets will be collected prior to boarding trains at Grand Central Terminal.

Service details are below, organized by day:

Friday, December 28:

On Friday, December 28, Metro-North will operate a reduced weekday a.m. peak service with additional inbound trains in the late morning. Metro-North will operate 18 extra trains departing Grand Central between 12:58 p.m. and 4:10 p.m. as listed below. After 5 p.m. some trains will be combined or cancelled because of reduced ridership later in the day.

Harlem Line:

  • 2:18 p.m., express to Scarsdale, then Hartsdale, White Plains and North White Plains 
  • 3:13 p.m., express to White Plains and North White Plains 
  • 3:34 p.m., express to White Plains, then North White Plains, Goldens Bridge, Purdy’s, Croton Falls, Brewster and Southeast

Hudson Line:

  • 1:38 p.m., express to Peekskill, then Beacon, New Hamburg and Poughkeepsie 
  • 2:38 p.m., express to Peekskill, then Beacon, New Hamburg and Poughkeepsie 
  • 3:11 p.m., express to Tarrytown, then Philipse Manor, Scarborough, Ossining and Croton-Harmon
  • 3:45 p.m., express to Peekskill, then Beacon, New Hamburg and Poughkeepsie
  • 4:11 p.m., express to Peekskill, then Beacon, New Hamburg and Poughkeepsie

New Haven Line:

  • 12:58 p.m. express to Westport, then Fairfield and all stops to New Haven 
  • 2:01 p.m. express to Westport, then Fairfield and all stops to New Haven 
  • 2:28 p.m. express to Westport, then Fairfield and all stops to New Haven 
  • 2:31 p.m. to New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison
  • 2:56 p.m. express to Stamford, Noroton Heights, Darien and Rowayton
  • 2:59 p.m. to New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison 
  • 3:26 p.m. to New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison •
  • 3:29 p.m. express to Westport, then Fairfield and all stops to New Haven
  • 4:00 p.m. express to Stamford, then Bridgeport, Stratford, Milford, West Haven and New Haven
  • 5:21 p.m., stopping at Mount Vernon East, Pelham, New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison

Saturday, December 29 and Sunday, December 30

A regular weekend schedule will be in effect, with an additional train on the Hudson Line and New Haven Line.

New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31

On New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31, Metro-North will operate a reduced weekday schedule in the morning and evening rush hours, with three additional early-evening inbound train on the Hudson Line:

Hudson Line, Southbound

  • 4:34 p.m. from Poughkeepsie, making stops at New Hamburg, Beacon, Peekskill, Croton-Harmon, Ossining, Tarrytown, Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal 
  • 5:34 p.m. from Poughkeepsie, making stops at New Hamburg, Beacon, Peekskill, Croton-Harmon, Ossining, Tarrytown, Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal
  • 6:34 p.m. from Poughkeepsie, making stops at New Hamburg, Beacon, Peekskill, Croton-Harmon, Ossining, Tarrytown, Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal

Service will also be provided “overnight” in the wee hours of New Year’s morning to get you safely home from New York City as follows:

Harlem Line, Northbound from Grand Central Terminal:

  • 12:35 a.m. express to White Plains then all stops to Southeast 
  • 12:40 a.m. making all stops to North White Plains
  • 1:05 a.m. express to White Plains then all stops to Southeast for connecting train making all stops to Wassaic
  • 1:10 a.m. express to Fordham then all stops to North White Plains 
  • 1:35 a.m. express to White Plains then all stops to Southeast 
  • 1:40 a.m. express to Mt. Vernon West then all stops to North White Plains 
  • 2:05 a.m. express to White Plains then all stops to Southeast
  • 2:10 a.m. making all stops to North White Plains 
  • 2:35 a.m. express to White Plains then all stops to Southeast
  • 2:40 a.m. express to Mt. Vernon West then all stops to North White Plains

West of Hudson Lines

On the West of Hudson Lines, a regular weekend schedule will operate, with additional outbound service to Port Jervis and Spring Valley after midnight.

Pascack Valley Line

  • 1:24 a.m. from Hoboken making all stops to Spring Valley. Passengers from Penn Station New York should board the 1:18 a.m. train and transfer at Secaucus Junction. 
  • 3:45 a.m. from Hoboken making all stops to Spring Valley. Passengers from Penn Station New York should board the 3:30 a.m. train and transfer at Secaucus Junction.

The 12:45 a.m. train departing Hoboken will not operate on New Year’s Eve.

Port Jervis Line:

  • 1:27 a.m. from Hoboken, making all stops to Port Jervis. Passengers from Penn Station New York should board the 1:18 am train and transfer at Secaucus Junction.
  • 3:00 a.m. from Hoboken, making all stops to Port Jervis. Passengers from Penn Station New York should board the 2:50 am train and transfer at Secaucus Junction.

New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1:

An hourly schedule will be in effect across the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines. Three additional eastbound and westbound trains will operate on the New Haven Line.

Regular weekend service will be in effect on the Danbury Branch, New Canaan Branch and Waterbury Branch.

New Haven Line: Westbound

  • 9:25 a.m. from New Haven making local stops to Stamford then running express to Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal 
  • 10:25 a.m. from New Haven making local stops to Stamford then running express to Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal
  • 11:25 a.m. from New Haven making local stops to Stamford then running express to Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal

New Haven Line Eastbound from Grand Central Terminal

  • 12:34 p.m. stopping at Stamford, Darien, South Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, then all stops to New Haven
  • 1:34 p.m. stopping at Stamford, Darien, South Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, then all stops to New Haven
  • 2:34 p.m. stopping at Stamford, Darien, South Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, then all stops to New Haven

As a caution, trains that start out their trips on time may experience delays en route. The Metro-North Train Time app also remains available for customers to access Metro-North train information.

Email and text message service updates – Customers are urged to sign up to receive the alerts by visiting MyMTAAlerts.com. To avoid unwanted messages, a user can tailor the messages to the specific branch, and the specific times of day.

The above communications channels can be accessed while at home or on the go. For customers who are located at stations, Metro-North will post the latest service updates on digital signs at station platforms and will make audio announcements over public address systems, and on-board announcements made by train crews.
