Port Jervis Station Improvements Project Makes Significant Progress
Crews Continue Work on Time with Visible Site Results

MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced that work to improve Port Jervis Station, the terminus of the West of Hudson Port Jervis Line, is moving at a swift and efficient pace with site preparation completed and demolition nearly done.

The project is part of the 2015-19 Capital Program and station investments and will make the Port Jervis Station the first along the Port Jervis Line to have a high-level platform in place. Communications and signal projects on the Port Jervis Line to support Positive Train Control were also completed last month with the cab signaling put into service for the 60-mile entirety of the line.

“Metro-North is happy to deliver on the commitment the MTA and I made to the community to invest in safety and capital improvements for our West of Hudson customers,” Metro-North President Cathy Rinaldi said. “The Port Jervis Station upgrades will provide a more modernized, usable space that will thoroughly enhance the customer experience.”

The contract was awarded December 2019 and is expected to be completed by December 2020. Improvements include a high-level platform to help with better boarding, a new ramp for an improved ADA experience, canopy and passenger shelter with art components to enhance user experience. Parking lot improvements include new sidewalk and curbing along the new station. Pay meters and ticket vending machines will be relocated for more convenient access.

The completion of work to prepare for site demolition and other activities include the following:

  • Relocation of parking meters and enclosure
  • Relocation of ticket vending machines (TVM) and installation of temporary TVM canopy
  • Temporary platform shelter in place
  • Temporary passenger walkway from parking lot to wooden ramp installed
  • Temporary lighting and directional signs have been put into place
  • Handicap parking spaces moved to temporary location
  • Installation of fencing and construction gate
  • Demolition of passenger shelter, bollards, platform and related equipment

Crews are now working on activities for the platform footings such as excavation, rebar fabrication and pouring concrete.

Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney said: “Metro-North is critical infrastructure for Hudson Valley families and workers and serves as a lifeline connecting us with economic opportunity across the state. These new safety and service improvements are welcome news to folks who utilize the Port Jervis station.”

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said: “It’s gratifying to see that this important project will be completed in an efficient manner. Safe and reliable transportation is important to Orange County residents and visitors alike. I thank the MTA for its diligent work in making these important upgrades to the Port Jervis Station.”

State Senator Jen Metzger said: “I am pleased to see that improvements at the Port Jervis Metro-North Railroad station are progressing smoothly. These much-needed investments will improve accessibility for people with disabilities and enhance the safety and overall experience of all passengers."

Assemblyman Karl A. Brabenec said: "Our residents are extremely happy that this project and these renovations are moving forward. "These improvements will certainly improve safety and service on the West of Hudson Port Jervis line."

Port Jervis Mayor Kelly B. Decker said: “The City is grateful that the MTA Metro-North Railroad is investing in it’s vital role to transport people to and from our city.  The elevated platform will not only ease access on and off the trains for commuters but will now provide for those with accessibility needs.  The new station will be highly visible and accessible to visitors looking to shop our city’s downtown business district, hit the Watershed Hiking and Biking Trails, visit historical sites or enjoy the scenic Delaware River; all within walking distance.”
