MTA Arts for Transit received an award from the National Conference of Artists at its 42nd annual meeting on April 13.
MTA Chairman Peter S. Kalikow said, "The MTA has brought a wide variety of art work to the public though its Arts for Transit program, and the diversity of the artists in the program is as broad as the population in the region. I am proud that the MTA is being recognized for this by the National Conference of Artists."
MTA Arts for Transit was selected in honor of the art in the MTA system in general, and in particular for the many African American artists who have been selected to create permanent art installations. MTA Arts for Transit commissions public art as part of its station rehabilitation program.
The National Conference of Artists brings together African American visual artists, arts educators, arts administrators, and other supporters to preserve, promote, and develop the creative forces and expressions of African American artists; and to improve their position in America and throughout the world.
