New York City Transit’s WWII Memorial Relocated to 130 Livingston Street
Granite Plaque Moved from Former Transit Headquarters

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has relocated a memorial honoring World War II service members of New York City Transit to the front lobby of 130 Livingston Street in Brooklyn.

The large stone memorial features the names of 85 employees superimposed onto a world map. It was previously installed outside the main entrance at 370 Jay Street, which was the former headquarters for NYC Transit. It was dismantled earlier this year and reassembled in June at 130 Livingston Street, which currently houses several Transit departments.

The memorial was commissioned in the 1940s by the Board of Transportation to honor Transit employees who died in military service during the Second World War, and was designed in 1949 by the architects of 370 Jay Street, William E. Haugaard and Andrew Thomas. It is comprised of 12 granite panels, nine of which are engraved, spanning 15 feet wide and 14 feet high.

Nine panels are engraved with the names of 85 employees who died in military service and a world map, which is marked with 24 bronze stars indicating the locations where those employees died. Each panel measures 2 inches thick, 5 feet wide, 3.5 feet high, and weighs approximately 500 pounds.

The memorial, which was constructed and installed on the ground floor of 370 Jay Street in the early 1950s, remained at that location until 1995. By then, it had been blocked from view by a reconfiguration of the space. To return it to public view, the memorial was moved to an exterior wall by the main entrance under the north portico in 1995.

In preparation for the renovation of 370 Jay Street as a new science campus for New York University, the memorial was removed earlier this year. It was rededicated in August 2015 during a ceremony at 130 Livingston Street that was attended by several Transit employees who had served during World War II.
