Early on the morning of Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, workers successfully completed the replacement of a 108-year-old bridge that carried the Long Island Rail Road over Nassau Boulevard in Garden City with a higher bridge that will reduce truck accidents, improve on-time performance, and carry a third bay for an expanding railroad. The bridge replacement, was completed over a 55-hour window from Friday evening through 5:54 a.m.

The weekend getaway season continues for Long Island Rail Road customers with the return of Autumn Weekends. Since launching in 2018, the LIRR’s Summer Saturdays and Autumn Weekends pilot programs have been so well-received and used by tens of thousands of customers. Now, the LIRR is expanding the program once again for five consecutive weekends between Oct. 12 and Nov. 10, 2019.

Metro-North Railroad has rolled out a new Rail Rewards program, which gives customers exclusive offers and discounts at Grand Central Terminal shops and restaurants. Most offers are valid through 2019. Metro-North’s Rail Rewards Program gives customers added value and savings to their train ticket.
MTA New York City Transit is reminding motorists that the agency and New York City’s Department of Transportation will start using automated mobile camera systems on buses to capture real-time bus lane violations as part of citywide efforts to increase bus speeds and keep traffic moving on congested streets. Cameras are installed on vehicles serving the M15 Select Bus Service route to begin capturing violations beginning October 7.
The MTA and the Transit Innovation Partnership announced a new collaborative effort exploring signal modernization that will include co-hosting a bidding conference to solicit technological innovations and proposals for reimagining the MTA’s signal systems. The announcement builds on the MTA’s ongoing association with the Transit Innovation Partnership — a public-private initiative between the MTA and the Partnership for New York City with the mission of making New York the global leader in public transit technologies — and comes just days after the release of the 2020-2024 MTA Capital Plan. The MTA Capital Plan calls for more than $50 billion in critical infrastructure and modernization investments, including $7 billion that would go directly towards using the latest technology to re-signal six lines in the New York City subway system.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced the first 48 New York City Transit stations that will be made fully ADA accessible under the proposed 2020-2024 Capital Plan that will significantly expand accessibility across the subway system and provide access to all customers. Recommendations for the additional 22 stations that will also receive accessibility improvements under the next capital plan will be subject to objective criteria, including which stations can be modified in the most efficient manner on the shortest timeline with minimal disruption to service, and public engagement with local stakeholders.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that it plans to enhance service on five bus routes benefitting a total of 65,000 customers to ensure ridership demand is met adequately and to operate citywide bus service more cost-efficiently and effectively while netting annual savings of $2.1 million.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) released the 2020-2024 Capital Plan that proposes investing $51.5 billion into the region’s subways, buses and railroads over the next five years to institutionalize and build on the progress of the Subway Action Plan and create a faster, more accessible, and more reliable public transportation system. The proposed level of investment is by far the highest in the MTA’s history, increasing spending on infrastructure by 70% over current levels, which were already the highest ever. The program plans to invest more than $40 billion in New York City Transit’s subways and buses alone – including crucial signal upgrades – as well as major investment in the Long Island Railroad and Metro-North.
Peak-direction express service on the F in Brooklyn begins on Monday, September 16, 2019. Express service will run between Church Av and Jay St-MetroTech, making one stop at 7 Av. F Express riders will save up to 7 minutes during their morning commute, and up to 6 minutes on their afternoon ride home.
The modernized South Tyson Avenue Bridge in Floral Park was rolled 13 feet into place over a single weekend, August 17-18. It was the third successful bridge roll-in of the summer as part of the LIRR Expansion Project.
The LIRR’s next fleet of rail cars, known as the “M9” cars, entered into passenger service on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019. The new cars incorporate and improve upon the most successful and popular features of the MTA’s two recent electric car fleets, the LIRR’s familiar M7s electric cars, and the M8 cars serving Metro-North’s New Haven Line, and will enhance safety.
This week, crews began construction to renew the infrastructure and upgrade the amenities at Lynbrook Station. The station, built in 1936, consists of a concrete viaduct with two island platforms. This pre-war station along the Babylon and Long Beach branches is undergoing a $17.9 million transformation in two phases; this first phase, which began on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, is expected to be complete in Q3 2020.
The Urban Avenue Grade Crossing in New Cassel, in the Town of North Hempstead, officially opened to traffic today, Thursday September 5 at 10:00 a.m., the first of eight grade crossings to be eliminated as part of the LIRR Expansion Project Floral Park to Hicksville. The new Urban Avenue Bridge was successfully installed in an innovative feat of engineering over the weekend of July 20-21, eliminating the railroad at grade crossing for vehicles.

The goal is to take a fresh look at the World’s Borough, its people, its travel needs, and what can be done to improve bus travel to meet those needs. The Queens Bus Network has not substantially changed in decades. The continuing decline in bus ridership in Queens, and in New York City, requires a fresh look at how we provide bus service. Buses are slowing down, and bus reliability is suffering. Over that same period, our customers’ needs have transformed dramatically. The bus network needs to evolve with them. We will build a new bus network to meet those needs.

MTA New York City Transit has announced new statistics showing the continued improvement in subway performance that have been achieved since the launch of the Subway Action Plan (SAP) and the Save Safe Seconds campaign. Year-over-year subway performance improvements continued in July, consistent with a months-long recent trend.
One year after MTA New York City Transit implemented a complete redesign of the Staten Island express bus network, newly released data is showing that express bus service between Manhattan and Staten Island has steadily improved across all metrics thanks to an unprecedented level of engagement with the MTA among customers, labor partners, local agencies and elected officials.
