Energy-efficient LED Lighting to Shine at Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

At the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge today, a maintenance worker suspended in a bucket truck replaced the first of 262 fifty-pound conventional light fixtures and necklace lights with a new lighter fixture and an energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) bulb.

The Verrazano-Narrows is slated to be the first among the agency's seven bridges to have hundreds of LED necklace lights installed in the next year as part of the authority's environmental program.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels, created in the midst of the Great Depression and now the world’s largest vehicular toll collection agency, turns 75 this year.  In 1968, the agency, then known as the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA), was folded into the newly created Metropolitan Transportation Authority and began providing financial support for MTA regional transit services.

$2.5 Billion Five-year Capital Program

MTA Bridges and Tunnels officials briefed the Bridges and Tunnels Committee of the MTA Board last week on their self-funded $2.5 billion five-year capital program.  The program is financed by bonds backed by the agency’s toll revenue.  The agency handles 830,000 vehicles a day and provides about 60% of its toll revenue to support the transit services of the MTA.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels Breaks Record for Vehicular Traffic in 2007

MTA Bridges and Tunnels' nine facilities handled 304.3 million trips in 2007, the most paid trips in the 72-year operating history of the agency, surpassing its previous record of 303 million set in 2004.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge carried the most traffic, with 70.3 million trips, followed by the Triborough Bridge with 62.5 million. The highest traffic was in August, when 27.2 million trips were made, while the single busiest day was Friday, June 22 with 973,864 single day trips. The record for 2007 represents an 0.74% increase over 2006 traffic.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels has fast-tracked the process to sign up for an E-ZPass account with the introduction of a new simplified one-page application form.

Applications are now available upon request at any cash lane at Triborough, Throgs Neck, Bronx-Whitestone, Henry Hudson Bridges, and the Queens Midtown and Brooklyn-Battery Tunnels.
