MTA's Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge Celebrates 70 Years of Linking Two NYC Boroughs

MTA officials joined elected officials and community leaders for a motorcade across the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge from Brooklyn to Rockaway, and a patriotic ceremony along the ocean today--exactly 70 years from the day the bridge opened for traffic on July 3, 1937. The bridge was built as part of a City plan to develop Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway Peninsula for recreational and residential use. In its seven decades, the bridge has carried millions of residents and visitors to and from the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens both by car and public transportation.

Falcon Chicks Tagged on Throgs Neck Bridge Tower

Hot Box Crews and Roadpatcher Are Out to Smooth Things Over At MTA Crossings

Spring has sprung a fresh crop of potholes on the roadways, but MTA Bridges and Tunnels' Hot Box Crews and the self-contained "Roadpatcher" truck, which can repair more than 100 potholes in an eight-hour shift, are out to smooth things over for drivers at the Authority's nine facilities.

Second Highest Number of Trips on MTA Bridges and Tunnels Crossings in 2006, with 302 Million

The nine crossings of MTA Bridges and Tunnels handled 302 million trips in 2006, a 0.5% increase over 2005 and the second highest volume in its 70 year operating history, reflecting a strong regional economy. The highest traffic was in 2004 at 302.9 trips.

Henry Hudson Lower Level Deck Replacement to Begin

The original Depression-era roadway deck of the Henry Hudson Bridge will be replaced beginning in early June as part of the $84.3 million rehabilitation project to replace and rehabilitate the roadway deck and north approach.

The project, expected to be completed by spring 2010, will involve round-the-clock closure of one southbound lane at a time until the project is completed. A second lane will be closed during off peak hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well. The closures are necessary to complete the work safely.

Late Night Lily Pond Avenue Detours Planned for Removal of Original Roadway Deck

Motorists should expect detours in both directions at Lily Pond Avenue late night and overnight beginning March 19th for three weeks (assuming good weather), while the original, concrete roadway deck on the bridge over Lily Pond Avenue is removed. The work is part of the $18 million Lily Pond Avenue rehabilitation project to replace the existing 43-year-old deck, steel structure, electrical, and reinforce abutment walls.
