MTA Completes Upgrade and Renewal of Murray Hill LIRR Station

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng and MTA Construction & Development President Janno Lieber today announced that the MTA has completed its upgrade and renewal of the Murray Hill LIRR station, bringing a major accessibility improvement. The station now has two elevators, one each for the eastbound and westbound platforms, making the station accessible to all customers for the first time. Crews also installed renewed retaining walls, new lighting, security cameras, signage and pigeon abatement measures.

LIRR Restores Full Service to Penn Station With March 9 Timetables

MTA Long Island Rail Road today announced that effective tomorrow, Monday, March 9, 10 rush hour trains to or from Penn Station that had been temporarily rerouted or canceled to accommodate Amtrak track work at Penn Station are resuming normal service. In addition, two early morning trains that had been added to the schedules to assist customers affected by the changes will continue.

New LIRR Positive Train Control Installations Nearly Double Safety System’s Coverage Across Railroad

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng today announced that the LIRR has activated Positive Train Control (PTC) on the eastern 108 miles of the railroad, from Patchogue to Montauk and from Ronkonkoma to Greenport.

The addition of these 108 miles nearly doubles the route miles of the LIRR that are operating in PTC, to 220. The activation puts 72.5% of the LIRR’s 305 total route miles now operating in PTC.

LIRR Crews to Perform Critical Work on New Massapequa Pocket Track and Substation in Freeport

On the weekend of Saturday, Feb. 29, and Sunday, March 1, MTA Long Island Rail Road forces will perform critical work on the replacement of the Meadowbrook Substation, in Freeport, an integral component of the rail infrastructure system that provide power to the trains and will ultimately support future growth of the LIRR.

MTA Police Seeking Public’s Help Identifying Man Fatally Struck by LIRR Train Last July 7 in Baldwin

The MTA Police Department is seeking the public’s help identifying a man struck by a train at the Baldwin Long Island Rail Road station in the early morning of July 7, 2019. Police are distributing an image of the man linked below showing him entering Baldwin station as well as two artist sketches of him also linked below.

LIRR Completes Nostrand Avenue Station Modernization

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Phillip Eng today joined Brooklyn elected officials, advocates and community members to open the newly rebuilt Nostrand Avenue station. The two-track elevated station features two new ADA-accessible elevators, platform canopies, new tactile warning strips on both platforms, and a new art glass installation created by a local artist. Construction on the project began in 2017 and cost $28.1 million.

LIRR Crews to Install New Switches and Perform Modernization Work Jan. 25-26

The Long Island Rail Road will continue work this weekend to upgrade switches at Jamaica as well as perform work related to Positive Train Control testing. PTC is a system designed to enhance railroad safety by preventing train-to-train collisions, over speed derailments, incursions into established work zones and the movement of a train through a switch left in the wrong position. As a result, there will be no train service between Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal, Saturday, Jan. 25, to Sunday, Jan. 26.
