Cashless Tolling FAQ and Progress

Get ready for easier trips across New York City toll bridges and tunnels! Toll booths and cash payments are fast becoming a thing of the past at MTA Bridges and Tunnels (B&T), so you will no longer have to stop to pay tolls. Seven B&T facilities now have Cashless Tolling:

  1. Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
  2. Robert F. Kennedy Bridge
  3. Queens Midtown Tunnel
  4. Hugh L. Carey Tunnel
  5. Henry Hudson Bridge
  6. Cross Bay Bridge
  7. Marine Parkway Bridge

And the finish is in sight–B&T will complete this transformation by October 2017.

B&T’s remaining facilities will have Cashless Tolling as follows:

  • Throgs Neck Bridge – September 2017
  • Bronx-Whitestone Bridge – October 2017

What does this mean for me?

It means that all B&T customers will pay tolls without stopping, resulting in a smoother, safer drive for everyone.

It also means that there will be no cash accepted at any MTA B&T bridges or tunnels. You can either pay your toll with E-ZPass and get a 30-50% discount, or you will be sent a full price toll bill in the mail. Click here to see B&T toll rates.

What should I do before I cross an MTA bridge or tunnel?

If you already have an E-ZPass, you’re good to go! Ensure your E-ZPass is mounted properly on your windshield and that your license plate is registered properly to your E-ZPass account to avoid getting toll bills in the unlikely event that your E-ZPass tag does not read properly. You will be charged the same discounted E-ZPass rate as in the past.

If you don’t have an E-ZPass, you can still use B&T facilities and be billed at the same toll rate as you did before Cashless Tolling. But why deal with full price toll bills when you can save 30-50% on your B&T tolls? Get more information about E-ZPass and sign up here. What are you waiting for?

E-ZPass accounts can be funded several different ways to meet your needs:

  1. Automatic Replenishment – The most common option. Your E-ZPass account is funded from either a credit/debit card or a bank account so that it is always ready to go.
  2. Pay Per Trip – For customers who would prefer to not pre-pay tolls, you can use your bank account to pay tolls at the time you need them. No need to maintain an E-ZPass account balance.
  3. Cash Reload Card – For customers who prefer to use cash, we’ll send you an MTA Reload Card that you can use to deposit cash into your E-ZPass account at any of the 2,500 Visa ReadyLink locations throughout the region. You can also deposit cash or checks at any of the three walk-in E-ZPass service centers. Smart tip for cash customers: sign up for email or text alerts when your account balance is low to avoid negative balance fees.

I’ve received a bill in the mail, what should I do?

Pay it. DMV regulations have taken effect which could result in the suspension of a registered vehicle owner’s registration for three unpaid tolls and each one is subject to violation fees of up to $100. It just not worth it to avoid paying tolls.

If you don’t like getting toll bills, the best option is to sign up for E-ZPass now.

I just crossed an MTA bridge or tunnel without an E-ZPass, what should I do?

You can wait to receive your bill to the address registered owner of the vehicle in approximately 30 days, or you can go to the Tolls by Mail website and choose the “Pay Toll Now” option.

If you don’t like going online to pay tolls and want to save 30-50%, you can sign up for E-ZPass now.

I have a rental car. How do I pay cashless tolls?

Most rental car companies have options to enable you to pay cashless tolls. However, you can avoid their fees by using Pay Toll Now. Just enter your rental car license plate, a credit/debit card, and the dates of your rental after clicking the rental/loaner box, and you’re good to go! You will automatically be billed for any tolls that you use—no bills, no hassle. Forget the link? Just dial **826 and we’ll send a link to your phone.

You can always get an E-ZPass, even if you don’t own a car. Sign up now and call 1-800-333-8655 for help when you are asked for a license plate.
