Special New Year's Service for Subways, Buses, SIR

2018 is almost here, and MTA New York City Transit is the best way for customers to get to the city's iconic New Year's revelry safely and quickly, whether it's to the ball drop at Times Square on New Year's Eve or neighborhood parties around the five boroughs. To make travel smoother and easier, advance purchase of MetroCards is strongly recommended. MetroCards are available for purchase at subway station booths, MetroCard Vending Machines located inside subway stations, and through a number of authorized third-party vendors. Until 8 a.m. Sunday, December 31 (New Year's Eve), E Subway trains operate over the F Subway line between Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av and W 4 St. M Subway trains operate only as a shuttle train service between Metropolitan Av and Myrtle-Wykoff Avs. These two lines are rerouted due to scheduled Subway Action Plan maintenance and repair work occurring in the 53rd Street E SubwayM Subway Tunnel. On Sunday, December 31 (New Year's Eve) and on Monday, January 1 (New Year's Day), New York City subways operate on a Sunday schedule. Customers can check “Weekender” for service status or download the SubwayTime app, which provides real-time arrival information for subway lines. Customers can also sign up for email alerts on service here

Customers heading to Times Square for the New Year's Eve celebration should avoid using the 42 St-Times Square subway complex, since they may not be allowed to exit onto the street. In addition, the northbound platform at 50 St 1 Subway and both north and southbound platforms at 49 St N SubwayQ SubwayR Subway will be closed from 7 p.m. until shortly after midnight. Riders are urged to exit at stations at 50 St or 57 St and walk to Times Square. Additional service will be provided in the 1 Subway2 Subway3 Subway4 Subway5 Subway6 Subway7 SubwayA SubwayC SubwayD SubwayE SubwayF SubwayL SubwayN SubwayQ SubwayR SubwayS Subway lines. Station entrances in the Times Square area are subject to closure based on instructions from the NYPD. 

Until approximately 3 a.m. on Monday, January 1, immediately following the celebration, subway trains on lines in and around Times Square will run every 8 to 12 minutes. The 42nd Street shuttle S Subway will operate all night.



For holiday travelers, as part of the Port Authority’s measures to alleviate roadway congestion at LaGuardia Airport during the peak holiday travel rush, MTA New York City Transit’s LaGuardia Link Q70 Select Bus Service is now fare-free through Tuesday, January 2. The LaGuardia Link provides non-stop service linking the main terminals of the airport (Terminals B, C and D) with the Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av 7 SubwayE SubwayF SubwayM SubwayR Subway subway station and the 61 St-Woodside 7 Subway subway station-Long Island Rail Road stop in Woodside, Queens. 

On Sunday, December 31 (New Year's Eve) and on Monday, January 1 (New Year's Day), New York City buses operate on a Sunday schedule. Customers using bus routes in the five boroughs should use MTA BusTime app to track real-time bus positions and gauge arrival times. Buses are not recommended for traveling to Times Square for the New Year's Eve ball drop because of the numerous street closures in the area. The following bus routes may be subject to reroutes during the event: M5, M7, M20, M42, M50, M104 and X1. Regular overnight bus service will resume as streets reopen after midnight. 


MTA Staten Island Railway

To help customers get a head start on the long holiday weekend, on Friday, December 29, Staten Island Railway is adding additional afternoon service. SIR is offering an “Early Departure Getaway” schedule, allowing customers to catch earlier afternoon express trains beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal. There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every ferry until 7:50 p.m.
