LIRR's Extra Service is Easiest Way to See Barclays PGA TOUR

The LIRR will be providing extra train service to get golf fans to and from The Barclays FedExCup Playoff event at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale this week. Trains will operate to Farmingdale Station every half hour during the four- day period of competition from Thursday, Aug. 23rd through Sunday, Aug. 26th. The LIRR will be selling train tickets online specifically for travel to and from the tournament for the first time. Practice rounds will be played on Tuesday, August 21 and Wednesday, August 22 when regular weekday train schedules will be in effect. The Barclays Pro-Am event takes place Wednesday, August 22 from 5:30 AM through 4:30 PM -; with amateur players competing alongside PGA TOUR professionals.

"There will be no faster or more convenient way to get to The Barclays than the LIRR," said LIRR President Helena E. Williams. "We will have plenty of extra LIRR service and personnel available to assist customers, so leave the driving to us."

At Farmingdale Station, LIRR customers will board free PGA TOUR shuttle buses for the short ride to Bethpage State Park and its famed Black Course, known for uphill fairways and long-distance pars that make it one of the toughest golf venues in the nation.

The Barclays draws the top 125 golfers on the PGA TOUR and kicks off the four-event FedExCup Playoffs which determine the season-long champion. Expected to compete are top ranked players like Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler. Dustin Johnson, the 2011 Barclays champion will be back to defend his title at the biggest golf event on Long Island since the 2009 U.S. Open -; also held at Bethpage Black.

Peter Mele, executive director of The Barclays said: "We are so pleased with the partnership with MTA Long Island Rail Road. The additional service will ensure that fans have the best experience coming to and from our event. We expect record crowds will attend to watch the PGA TOUR's best and encourage everyone to take advantage of the LIRR as a convenient and quick way to get to Bethpage."

Parking Only at Jones Beach

The LIRR and tournament organizers issued reminders that there is no parking available at Bethpage State Park on practice days or during the tournament play. Fans who travel by car must park at Jones Beach, then board PGA TOUR shuttle buses for the trek east to the golf course.

Because Farmingdale Station is on the LIRR's Main Line, Suffolk County residents traveling west to Farmingdale should know that they can park free on weekends at any LIRR station east of Farmingdale (Ronkonkoma, Central Islip, Brentwood, Deer Park and Wyandanch), then hop a train to The Barclays. Nassau County residents traveling east to Farmingdale can park on weekends at the Mineola Intermodal Center at Mineola Station for $5.

Rail Tickets Available Online for this Event

For the first time, LIRR customers heading for The Barclays will be able to buy their train tickets online and print them out or display their bar-coded tickets on a smart phone under a pilot program and partnership between the LIRR and the Long Island technology firm CooCoo.

Round trip tickets to Farmingdale can be purchased directly at or on the MTA website.

Once the online purchase is made, customers will receive their train tickets via email for presentation to LIRR staff at Farmingdale Station, where they will be validated with a handheld barcode-reader. The online service is being provided only for The Barclays and so those tickets are good only for the day specified on the ticket. They cannot be used for travel on the LIRR at any other time or to reach any other destination.

"We encourage fans to avoid potential lines at Penn Station and at other stations by buying their LIRR tickets in advance online via CooCoo," said LIRR President Williams. "The CooCoo pilot is one of several technologies the LIRR has been testing as we look for ways to bring our ticketing system into the 21st Century. This pilot program offers great customer convenience and allows the LIRR to test out the CooCoo technology during the six days of The Barclays."

Ryan Thompson, co-founder of CooCoo, said, "We designed the CooCoo mobile transit ticketing solution with the consumers in mind. The feedback from the LIRR riders who have already purchased their transit tickets to The Barclays via CooCoo has been excellent. They're finding our system easy to use, accurate and convenient. Our system is fast, secure and the best way to buy mobile tickets for this big event."
