Essential Track Repair Work Coming to Flushing 7 Line
Portions of the Line Will be Closed on Weekends and Some Nights in January and Early February

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) announced plans today to perform much-needed track work on the 7 line on nights and weekends throughout January and February. The work is critical to improving the reliability of the line.

The work will include vital repairs to a 2,000-foot section of track near Grand Central, where defects were discovered during the recent installation of a modern new signaling system called Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC).  While the track is safe for current use, its repair is essential for future reliability and safety.  Replacing this section of track requires chipping out existing concrete, the installation of a temporary track structure, and the pouring of new concrete.

Workers will also address a host of other longstanding challenges on the line, including water conditions in the right-of-way, worn rail, and deteriorated track ties and concrete.

The work also includes essential calibration activity for the new CBTC system, and the removal of now out-of-service signal equipment replaced by CBTC.

“The 7 line is a critical transit artery in Queens and we are doing everything we can to improve its reliability and performance,” said NYC Transit President Andy Byford. “This is work that could not have been completed while we were installing the new signal system and it is absolutely critical it be completed soon. We thank our customers for their patience; when this work is completed, customers will be using a line with enhanced reliability and performance.”
