X22A Service Pilot to Outerbridge Park & Ride
Trial Begins Monday, January 30th

In an effort to provide faster service between the South Shore of Staten Island and Midtown Manhattan, MTA New York City Transit announced the rerouting of several rush hour X22 bus trips to serve the Outerbridge Park and Ride lot.

This will mean a faster trip for those using the Park & Ride lot and for Tottenville customers as well. It is expected that riders originating at the Park & Ride will save nine minutes in travel time and those beginning in Tottenville will save 13 minutes compared to the current service. "We are pleased that we can offer this plan to better serve the park and ride lot without negatively affecting existing X22 riders," said MTA New York City Transit President Thomas Prendergast, "and we can do it without incurring extra cost."

This rerouting will operate for a trial period of six months. The new service will then operate non-stop along the West Shore Expressway between the Park & Ride and Checkpoint on Arthur Kill Road on a trial basis beginning Monday, January 30.

"The X22A represents the most significant positive change to express bus service to the south shore," said City Council Member Vincent Ignizio. "The more riders we get to participate in this pilot program, the easier the expansion of the program will become."

In December 2010, the private carrier Atlantic Express discontinued the only express bus route that served the Outerbridge Park & Ride lot. In July 2011, NYC Transit rerouted some X22 buses to provide service to the Park & Ride. However, this reroute added approximately eight to ten minutes of travel time for Tottenville customers because of the indirect route to access the lot.

The current pilot will call for four morning and four afternoon trips labeled X22A, traveling non-stop along the West Shore Expressway between the Outerbridge Park & Ride lot and Checkpoint, located at Arthur Kill Road and Huguenot Avenue. All remaining X22 trips, except for one evening trip, will cease serving the Park & Ride lot.

"We would like to thank Councilman Ignizio for his work with the union and the MTA in getting the route change in place," said ATU Local 726 President Daniel Cassella. "It is imperative that we work together to improve bus service on Staten Island and improve the quality of life for the residents of this borough.

In the morning, the X22A trips leave Tottenville (Page Ave and Hylan Blvd) at 5:50 AM, 6:19 AM, 6:47 AM, and 7:15 AM. They then operate via the X22 route until the Outerbridge Park-Ride lot, leaving there at 6:05 AM, 6:35 AM, 7:03 AM and 7:32 AM. After that stop they operate via the West Shore Expressway to the Arthur Kill Road Checkpoint and the Victory Boulevard stop; then travel on to Manhattan.

In the afternoon, the X22A trips leave 57th Street at 4:05 PM, 4:42 PM, 5:12 PM, and 5:41 PM. After leaving Manhattan via the X22 route, they stop at the Victory Boulevard and Arthur Kill Road stops to drop off customers, then direct to the Outerbridge Park-Ride lot. Upon leaving the lot they follow the rest of the X22 route to Tottenville. In addition, the X22 trip leaving 57th Street at 6:12 PM also stops in the Outerbridge Park-Ride lot on the way to Tottenville for customers needing service to the lot later in the PM rush hour.

And, instead of waiting for the bus, riders can use Bus Time to meet their bus at the stop. Staten Island express and local buses can be tracked in real time on the Internet, smart phones and by text message to any cell phone. For more information on Bus Time visit the website at
