Travelin' Time
Travelin' Time
About the project
Martha Jackson-Jarvis has spent much of her career exploring the qualities of clay bodies, glazes, and firing techniques. In Travelin Time, Jackson-Jarvis embraces the elements of surprise and three-dimensional effects that arise when working with mosaic and sculpture. The artwork encourages riders to look above and explore the sculptures in a non-traditional way of how sculpture is conventionally viewed. "Conceptually, ‘Travelin' Time’ occupies transitional space. It is a space between points, a place of resting, of waiting, of new beginnings and departures," says artist Martha Jackson-Jarvis. "Though Mount Vernon station is indeed public space, it still remains an intimate space where human scale and pace are slowed momentarily. It is a space in which we are asked to wait . . . and while waiting contemplate traveling through time and space to distances unknown, yet familiar."
The artwork has been de-installed.
