What is the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program?
Beginning June 30, 2026, the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program will be in effect on MTA Bridges and Tunnels facilities. Under the AWZSE Program, drivers who speed in designated work zones will be subject to a warning or a fine.
The program was signed into law in 2021 by Gov. Kathy Hochul and later amended in 2025 to include MTA Bridges and Tunnels. The program has already proven successful on NYSDOT and NYSTA roadways. Safety is our top priority, and the goal of the program is to deter unsafe driving in work zones, and reduce the potential for speeding, crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
How the program works
The AWZSE program will roll out in phases. In the first 30 days after the Program starts, warning notices will be issued for exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour.
In the second phase, violations and fines will be issued for exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour. These will be issued no sooner than 30 days after the program starts.
- Radar, camera, and computer equipment is mounted on an unmarked vehicle stationed in a work zone. This equipment will identify vehicles traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit and trigger the cameras to take photos of the vehicles, including their license plate numbers.
- Data collected includes the date and time that the images are recorded, the posted speed, the vehicle’s actual speed, and the license plate information used to identify the registered vehicle owner.
- A certified MTA Bridges and Tunnels technician will verify that the data is correct. If the technician verifies that a violation occurred, a Notice of Liability will be mailed to the registered vehicle owner.
AWZSE and work zone locations
Any of our Bridges and Tunnels facilities may have automated work zone speed enforcement in effect whenever work is ongoing.
This includes:
- Bronx-Whitestone Bridge
- Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge
- Henry Hudson Bridge
- Hugh L. Carey Tunnel
- Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge
- Queens-Midtown Tunnel
- Robert F. Kennedy Bridge
- Throgs Neck Bridge
- Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Hugh L. Carey Tunnel
Signs alerting drivers to the presence of speed enforcement cameras will be posted ahead of where the work zones begins.
Violations and fines
A Notice of Liability will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle within 14 business days of the violation for vehicles registered in New York state, and within 45 days for vehicles registered outside of New York.
- First violation: $50
- Second violation: $75 (if within 18 months of the first violation)
- All subsequent violations: $100 (if within 18 months of the first violation)
These fines are subject to additional late fees. Because these are considered non-moving infractions, they will not appear on driving records or be reported to insurance providers.
How to pay the violation fine
Violation fines can be paid online, by mobile app, by mail, or in person at the NYC Department of Finance Business Centers. Follow the instructions on the back of the Notice of Liability for more information.
View the recorded violation images
You may view the images associated with your Notice of Liability online at ViolationInfo.com. Enter the Violation Notice number and PIN shown on the front of the notice. The recorded images may be used as evidence in any administrative hearing where the Notice of Violation is being disputed.
Data, images, and all photographic records (excluding rejected incidents) produced by the automated work zone speed enforcement system, and any confidential information obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be destroyed upon final resolution of the Notice of Liability or one year after it is issued, whichever is later. Rejected incident data and images will be destroyed 60 days after the incident date.
Dispute a violation
Notices of Violation believed to be issued in error can be disputed online, by mobile application, by mail, or in person. Follow the instructions on the notice to request a hearing.
