Major service changes on the 4 and 5 lines in January and February 2026

There will be service changes while we replace switches. Here’s what you need to know.

What we're doing

From January 5 to late February 2026, there will be service changes on the    lines between the Bronx and Manhattan:

  • During weeknights starting January 5,   trains won't run between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 125 St, and will run in two sections.
  • During weekends starting January 23,    trains won't run between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 125 St, and   trains will run in two sections.
  • During weekday rush hours starting January 26,    trains will run less frequently and at reduced speeds.

Why we're doing it

We're replacing switches north of 125 St on the Jerome Av Line, which carries the    trains between the Bronx and Manhattan. These switches were last replaced in 1988 and have reached the end of their useful lives. Replacing them will help us continue to deliver reliable service to the riders who rely on these lines every day.

Weeknight service changes starting January 5

From 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday to Friday,   trains won't run between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 125 St.

  •   trains will run in two sections:
    • Between Woodlawn and 149 St-Grand Concourse.
    • Between New Lots Av and 125 St, and on the   to/from 3 Av-138 St.
  • For service between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 125 St, take free shuttle buses, which will run between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 3 Av-138 St  , stopping at 138 St-Grand Concourse.
  • Consider taking the   or   for service between the Bronx and Manhattan.

Weekend service changes starting January 23

From 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (and 5 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, Presidents Day),   trains won't run between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 125 St and   trains won't run between E 180 St and Bowling Green.

  •   trains will run in two sections:
    • Between Woodlawn and 149 St-Grand Concourse.
    • Between Crown Hts-Utica Av or New Lots Av and 125 St, and on the   to/from 3 Av-138 St.
  •   trains will run between Eastchester-Dyre Av and E 180 St.
  • For service between E 180 St and 149 St-Grand Concourse, take the  .
  • For service between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 125 St, take free shuttle buses, which will run between 149 St-Grand Concourse and 3 Av-138 St  , stopping at 138 St-Grand Concourse.
  • For service between 125 St and Bowling Green, take the  .
  • Consider taking the   or   for service between the Bronx and Manhattan.
  • Metro-North will accommodate subway riders at no additional cost for travel between the Bronx and Manhattan at all stations between University Heights or Wakefield and Grand Central.

Weekday service changes starting January 26

During rush hours,    trains will run less frequently and at reduced speeds, and some trains will be rerouted.

  • Consider taking the    or   for service between the Bronx and Manhattan to avoid crowding.
