After decades of swipes, the iconic MetroCard is reaching the end of the line. From October through December 31, 2025, join the MTA as we celebrate its legacy with a citywide send-off filled with special food collaborations and other limited-edition experiences. This months-long event is both a tribute and a transition, as we celebrate the MetroCard while fully moving to our contactless tap-and-ride fare payment system.
Earlier this year, the MTA announced that MetroCard sales will end on December 31, 2025, with most customers now using our contactless tap-and-ride payment system to pay their fares. Customers can tap and ride using their digital wallets, contactless credit and debit cards, and OMNY Cards.
MetroCard will still be accepted into 2026; the final acceptance date will be announced at a later time.
