As extreme cold and subzero wind chills move into the New York metro area this weekend, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is advising commuters of proactive safety measures. The agency is mobilizing to ensure both passenger safety and the continuity of subway, bus, and rail operations during the deep freeze.
Bridges and Tunnels
Based on the current weather forecast, MTA Bridges and Tunnels will implement a ban on empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks beginning Saturday, Feb. 7, at 2:00 p.m. The ban is expected to be in place until approximately 11:00 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7.
Pedestrian walkways at the Cross Bay Bridge, Marine Parkway Bridge, Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, and the Henry Hudson Bridge will remain open, but may close depending on wind conditions.
NYC Transit
NYC Transit has additional personnel monitoring real-time conditions and is ready to respond to weather-related issues as they arise.
NYC Transit’s Department of Subways is deploying additional staff to key locations to facilitate rapid response to weather-related issues. Crews are also monitoring transit infrastructure across the system and implementing corrective actions as necessary.
Additional Depot and Road Operations personnel for NYC Transit’s Department of Buses are on hand to minimize any service or equipment interruptions. Bus operators have been instructed to reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and fully clear snow, ice, and frost from windshields, mirrors, and lights before operating a vehicle.

Long Island Rail Road
The Long Island Rail Road has added personnel to monitor the impact of extreme cold on tracks and key switching locations and to make adjustments or repairs as needed. Station waiting rooms remain open continuously from their normal opening time on Monday morning through their regular closing time on Tuesday evening.
