MTA Announces Service Changes on 4-5-6 Lines for Two Weekends in August

Service on   and   Lines to Be Suspended South of Grand Central-42 St Aug. 15-18 and Aug. 22-25 for Concrete Replacement Work

 

 Line Operates Between Dyre Ave and East 180 St Both Weekends

 

MTA to Run  and Overnight   42 St Shuttle Trains Both Weekends

 

New Concrete Will Improve Switch Function, Resulting in Even More Reliable Service for 1.1 Million Daily Riders

 

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced track replacement work along the     lines that will require a suspension of service south of Grand Central-42 St during the weekends of Aug. 15-18 and Aug. 22-25. The service suspensions will begin Friday at 11:30 p.m. and end 5:00 a.m. Monday. During that time, crews will replace the concrete under switches north of 14 Street, which will renew the infrastructure to keep it in a state of good repair and continue to provide reliable service for 1.1 million daily riders.  

This work is part of the MTA’s commitment to maintaining a state of good repair and is pivotal to ensuring the structural stability and functionality of the subway system. Replacing the concrete also protects the system from leaks and corrosion, prolonging the overall longevity of the subway infrastructure.  

During these closures,   trains will not run between Grand Central-42 St and Crown Hts-Utica Av or New Lots Av.  trains will run local between Woodlawn and Grand Central-42 St.   trains will not run between E. 180 St and Bowling Green.   trains will run only north of E 180 St to and from Eastchester-Dyre Av.   trains will not run between Grand Central-42 St and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.   trains will run local between Pelham Bay Park and Grand Central-42 St.  

Service Alternatives in Manhattan 

To assist customers during this service outage, the MTA will activate special weekend   line service that will run from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday. This is the first time the   has operated on the weekend since March 15. In addition, the MTA will run the   42 St Shuttle all weekend, including the overnight hours, when it is typically not in service.  

For service in Manhattan between Grand Central-42 St to Bowling Green, use nearby        stations. Transfer between    and    rains at Lexington Av-59 St. Transfer between Grand Central-42 St 46 trains and Times Sq-42 St 

     

 trains using the   or   42 St Shuttle.

Service Alternatives in Brooklyn 

In Brooklyn, customers are encouraged to consider the    for service between Borough Hall and Franklin Av-Medgar Evers College, or the   for service between Franklin Av-Medgar Evers College and New Lots Av.   trains will run to and from New Lots Av all weekend, including the overnight hours, when they typically do not operate. 

Additional MTA Construction and Development (C&D) Work  

During the weekends of Aug. 15 and Aug. 22, MTA C&D crews will “piggyback” off these temporary closures to perform a series of important capital improvement projects along the Lexington line. These include accessibility projects, communications upgrades, under-river tunnel repairs, and work on the ongoing comprehensive rehabilitation of the Borough Hall    station. Coordinating these C&D projects to coincide with track reconstruction work builds on the MTA’s commitment to “faster, better, cheaper,” which will save riders time from future service outages and create a smoother, more efficient transit system for generations of New Yorkers to come.

MTA app – Customers who use the comprehensive MTA smartphone app will see real-time train, bus and rail arrival times, and can chat with our customer care team all in one place. The app is available in the Apple Store and in Google Play. 

Email & Text Alerts – Customers can sign up for email and SMS alerts tailored to their specific commutes and travel times. They can also sign up for MTA newsletters like The Weekender, a weekly newsletter that covers major weekend planned service changes. Customers can sign up here.
