MTA Is the Best Way to Travel This Labor Day Weekend

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today provided details on service highlights for the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend across New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, Access-A-Ride, and Bridges and Tunnels.

Long Island Rail Road

On Saturday, Aug. 30, the LIRR will operate on a normal Saturday schedule. On Sunday, Aug. 31, the LIRR will operate on a Saturday schedule.

On Monday, Sept. 2, the LIRR will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule with Montauk Branch trains running on a Sunday schedule. Other changes include:

  • The 11.36 a.m., 1.46 p.m., and 4:17 p.m. trains from Montauk to Penn Station, the 6:21 p.m. train from Montauk to Penn Station and the 3:25 p.m. train from Southampton to Jamaica, usually scheduled to run Sundays, will instead run on Monday along with other added service from the Hamptons and Montauk. This is in addition to regular Montauk Branch service.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, the 7:17 a.m. train from Montauk to Hunterspoint Ave, which usually runs on summer Mondays, is instead scheduled to run on Tuesday for those returning to New York City after the long holiday weekend.

Metro-North Railroad

Metro-North will have service adjustments on both the East and West of Hudson Lines for the Labor Day weekend.

East of Hudson  

Extra trains will operate on Friday, Aug. 29, on Metro-North’s three East of Hudson lines.

Hudson Line

On the Hudson Line, Metro-North Railroad will operate three early getaway trains on Friday, Aug. 29, to allow customers to get an early start on the holiday weekend. 

  • The 1:18 p.m. train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie will stop at Harlem-125 Street, operate express to Croton-Harmon and make all stops to Poughkeepsie, except Manitou.
  • The 1:51 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem-125 Street and make all stops to Croton-Harmon. Hudson Rail Link buses will meet at Spuyten Duyvil and Riverdale.
  • The 2:18 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem-125 Street, run express to Croton-Harmon and make all stops to Poughkeepsie, except Manitou.  
  • The 5:30 p.m. and 6:11 p.m. trains to Poughkeepsie will not operate.

The Hudson Rail Link buses will meet the 1:51 p.m. early getaway train at Spuyten Duyvil and Riverdale stations for their routes throughout the respective neighborhoods. The Hudson Rail Link bus service will not operate on Labor Day.

The Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry will operate early getaway service and will meet the 2:43 p.m. local and 3:21 p.m. express train departures from Grand Central. The Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry will not operate on Labor Day.

The Newburgh-Beacon substitute bus service, operating in lieu of the ferry, will operate early getaway service and will meet the 2:43 p.m., 3:18 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. departures from Grand Central.  Customers who normally ride the 5:30 p.m. Poughkeepsie express from Grand Central, should ride the 5:32 p.m. Poughkeepsie express, which will connect with the substitute bus at Beacon. The Newburgh-Beacon substitute bus service will not operate on Labor Day.

Harlem Line

On the Harlem Line, Metro-North Railroad will operate two early getaway trains:      

  • The 1:15 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem-125 Street, run express to White Plains and make all stops to Goldens Bridge, except Mount Pleasant    
  • The 1:49 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem-125 Street and make all stops to North White Plains.  
  • The 5:27 p.m. train to Southeast will not operate.

New Haven Line  

On the New Haven Line, there will be three early getaway trains and one service change:    

  • The 2:28 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem-125 Street, run express to Westport and select stops to New Haven.   
  • The 2:56 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem-125 Street, run express to Larchmont and make all stops to Stamford.   
  • The 3:27 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem-125 Street, run express to Stamford, then Westport and select stops to New Haven.   
  • The 5:18 p.m. train to New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison will not operate. Instead, the 5:21 p.m. train from Grand Central which stops at Mt. Vernon East, Pelham and New Rochelle, will be extended to Harrison making stops at Larchmont and Mamaroneck.  
  • The 5:41 p.m., 6:07 p.m. and 6:44 p.m. New Haven express trains will not operate.

Metro-North's East of Hudson lines will operate a normal Saturday schedule on Saturday, Aug. 30, and a Sunday schedule on both Sunday, Aug. 31, and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. Normal weekday service resumes on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

West of Hudson - Port Jervis Line

On Friday, Aug. 29, the 2:41 p.m. train from Hoboken Terminal to Middletown, NY will be extended to Port Jervis, making stops at Otisville and Port Jervis. The 6:14 p.m. train from Hoboken Terminal to Port Jervis will not operate.

On Monday, Sept. 1, an extra train departs Port Jervis at 4:05 p.m., making all stops through Suffern, then express to Secaucus Junction and Hoboken, arriving at Hoboken at 6:24 p.m., with a connecting train at Secaucus Junction to New York Penn Station arriving in New York at 6:33 p.m.

New York City Transit

Subways will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, Sept. 1. There will be planned service changes in the subway system throughout Labor Day weekend.

Information about planned service changes can be found on the MTA website or the MTA app.

Buses operated by the MTA will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, Sept. 1. Many routes do not operate on Sundays or do not run on part of the route at certain hours. Bus customers traveling on Labor Day should check Sunday schedules, lines and routes.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels

Routine maintenance and construction at all MTA Bridges and Tunnels crossings will cease at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Daytime scheduled maintenance requiring full lane closures will be suspended beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Critical roadwork may be permitted during overnight hours at times when traffic permits. Maximum roadway availability will be maintained during times of peak travel.

Customers are advised to check any of the MTA’s multiple communications channels listed below before traveling.

Access-A-Ride Paratransit

Access-A-Ride customers can make trip reservations via phone, web, or app. Customers can call Access-A-Ride at (877) 337-2017 or (718) 393-4999 to reserve trips one or two days in advance, book trips online at https://www.mta.info/accessibility/access-a-ride, or via the MTA app.

The Access-A-Ride Command Center operates 24/7 to assist customers on the day of trip, such as confirming a reservation or ascertaining a vehicle’s estimated time of arrival. Customers should call (877) 337-2017 or (718) 393-4999 and press prompt #5.

Ways to Stay Informed

The MTA offers customers a variety of ways to receive real-time and planned service change information, including:

mta.info – The definitive source for real-time arrival information and service change information for each line or route in the MTA system. Customers can find current statuses on mta.info and upcoming planned service changes using the lookup tool at mta.info/alerts.  

MTA app – Customers who use the comprehensive MTA smartphone app will see real-time train, bus and rail arrival times, and can chat with the customer care team all in one place. The app is available in the Apple Store and in Google Play.

Email & Text Alerts – Customers can sign up for email and SMS alerts tailored to their specific commutes and travel times. They can also sign up for MTA newsletters like The Weekender, a weekly newsletter that covers major weekend planned service changes. Customers can sign up here

511 – Customers who prefer to contact the MTA by telephone, information is available by dialing 511. Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can use their preferred service provider for the free 711 relay to reach the MTA at 511.
