About the project
Modern fare gates will help ensure our customers are safe, speed up entry and exit time, provide wayfinding, deter fare evasion, and improve accessibility.
We're testing three gate designs from three different vendors at 20 stations throughout New York City, starting in 2025.
After a vendor or vendors is selected, the MTA will install the new fare gates at 150 stations in all five boroughs. These stations will be selected based on ridership, fare evasion rates, accessibility needs, and whether they are a major transit hub. With funding from the 2025-2029 Capital Plan, stations serving 75% of riders will be equipped with modern fare gates.
Fare gate testing
Over the next several months, we will replace turnstiles and/or emergency exit gates at 20 stations with modern “paddle door” fare gates designed by three different vendors. Most gates will take approximately one to two weeks to install. Some station entrances will be closed during installation. View alternative travel information for closed entrances, including accessible travel options.

Previous fare gate pilots
In 2020, we demonstrated a new accessible wide fare gate at Jay St-MetroTech. This style of gate, with "saloon style" doors, is similar to gates used in other local systems like PATH, and other transit systems across the country and world.
In 2023, we installed wide aisle fare gates at 34 St-Port Authority, Astoria Blvd, Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr, and Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK stations. These new gates replaced AutoGates to provide better accessibility for people traveling with mobility devices, service animals, strollers, luggage, or others who have trouble using turnstiles.
