Over the next several months, we will replace turnstiles and/or emergency exit gates at 20 stations with modern “paddle door” fare gates. Read more about the fare gate designs.
Most gates will take approximately one to two weeks to install. See a list of stations where installation is completed.

Using modern fare gates
The new fare gates will only accept tap and ride for fare payments. You will be able to use a contactless bank card, smart device, or OMNY Card to pay the fare. If you still use a MetroCard, you will still be able to enter stations at other entrances.
As you approach the gates from the paid side to exit, sensors will detect you approaching, and open automatically. There is no need to "tap out."
In case of an emergency, gates will automatically open for customer egress. All gates will have the ability to be remotely opened.
If you encounter any issues with the new gates, see a station agent, call 511, use the chat function in the MTA app, or use a Help Point intercom.
