LIRR and Metro-North fares

See details about Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad fares, how and where to buy tickets, what our refund policies are, and more.

About railroad fares

  • Peak fares are charged during weekday rush hours on trains scheduled to arrive in NYC terminals between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. or depart NYC terminals between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. On Metro-North, peak fares also apply to weekday trains that leave Grand Central between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
  • Off-peak fares are charged all other times on weekdays, all day Saturday and Sunday, and on holidays.
  • Exact fares depend on your trip. The easiest way to see what your trip will cost is by using our schedules or the TrainTime app. Or see our fare tables.
  • Each railroad station is assigned a fare zone. Tickets are valid to any station in the listed zone.

How to buy railroad tickets

  • The most convenient way to buy railroad tickets is the TrainTime app on your phone. All mobile tickets must be activated before boarding.
  • You can buy a paper ticket before you board at a ticket machine at most stations, or at a ticket office at some stations. See station information, including ticket machine locations and ticket office locations and hours.
  • You can buy a one-way ticket from the conductor on board the train, but there is a $7.75-8.50 surcharge for on-board sales. This surcharge is waived if you board at a station without ticket machines, or if you are a senior citizen, passenger with a disability, Medicare recipient, or active-duty military member.
  • If your company offers a tax-free transit benefit program, you can use it to buy LIRR or Metro-North tickets. Learn more about pre-tax transit benefits.
  • You can subscribe to monthly tickets through the ticket Ticket Services program, which automatically delivers your monthly ticket to the TrainTime app on your phone. Learn more about Ticket Services for the LIRR and Metro-North.

Railroad ticket types

One-way

One-way tickets are good for one trip between two stations in the zones listed on the ticket. They are valid until 4 a.m. the day after purchase. This applies to both paper and mobile tickets. Mobile tickets must be activated before boarding.

Off-peak tickets are subject to an additional surcharge, payable to the conductor, if used on a peak train. No refund is available if a peak ticket is used on an off-peak train.

For travel outside Manhattan on Metro-North, and outside Zones 1/3 on the LIRR, the fare is the same on all trains. On Metro-North, look for "intermediate" tickets. On the LIRR, look for peak tickets.

You do not have to pay more or buy two tickets if you have to make transfers in the same direction to complete your trip.

  • On the LIRR, if you have to make a transfer that involves a change of direction (for instance, traveling from Mineola to Valley Stream via Jamaica), look for a ticket "via" your transfer point when you buy.
  • On Metro-North, if you make a transfer that involves a change of direction at Fordham or Harlem-125 St, you will need to buy two tickets.
  • Travel to/from Yankee Stadium and Mets-Willets Point is exempt from these rules. See the section on Train to the Game fares below.
Day Pass

The Day Pass is valid for unlimited travel between the selected zone pairs from the time of purchase until 4 a.m. the following day.

Mobile Day Pass tickets auto-activate after purchase on TrainTime. A paper ticket can also be purchased from ticket machines or ticket offices.

Monthly and weekly

Monthly: Good for unlimited rides between the listed zones, on any train, for a calendar month. This is the most cost-effective ticket if you’re riding three or more days a week. They are available for purchase starting the 25th of the prior month. You can use a monthly ticket for up to one additional ride before 10 a.m. on the first business day of the following month.

Weekly: Good for unlimited rides between the listed zones, on any train, from 12:01 a.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. the following Saturday. They are available for purchase beginning Wednesday for the following week.

Monthly and weekly tickets are non-transferable; the first person to use it is the only person who can use it.

Monthly and weekly tickets to/from Manhattan on the New Haven Line are accepted on the Harlem and Hudson lines where the value of the Harlem/Hudson monthly/weekly ticket is the same or less.

If you are traveling beyond the zones shown on your ticket:

  • With a LIRR one-way ticket, you pay the conductor the the difference between the ticket value and the one-way price of the ride you are taking.
  • For all other ticket types, and on Metro-North, you pay the conductor the one-way fare between the zone on your ticket and the zone you are actually traveling to/from.
