July 26 marks the 36th year since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed. To commemorate this milestone, MTA Accessibility will host or participate in a variety of events throughout the month of July.
If you have an event anytime throughout the year that you think would be a good opportunity to collaborate with MTA Accessibility, please email us at accessibility@mtahq.org or fill out this form.
MTA Accessibility highlights
There are now more than 160 fully accessible subway stations! In the past year, we’ve made nine stations accessible:
- 57 St
- 137 St-City College (uptown only, downtown under construction)
- Borough Hall
- Church Av
- Harlem-148 St
- Parkchester
- Rockaway Blvd
- Sheepshead Bay
- Spring St (downtown only)
We have also made two Long Island Rail Road stations—Valley Stream and Laurelton—accessible. So far this year, we have completed 15 elevator replacements, ensuring that our assets remain accessible.
Other highlights include:
- Expanding the Convo American Sign Language pilot to additional subway, LIRR, and Metro-North stations.
- Thousands of uses of the NaviLens and NaviLensGo tool across the system.
- Introducing 10 new members to our Advisory Committee for Transit Accessibility (ACTA).
- Launching the new MTA app, which makes it easier to plan accessible trips and monitor real-time elevator status.
- More sign-ups for Reduced-Fare OMNY Cards.
