Taking public transit to New York beaches

You can take subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad to New York's beaches. Here are some options for how to get there.

From Long Beach to Fire Island, you can amble along boardwalks, pitch a tent next to the ocean, or simply lay back and soak up the sun. Let the MTA get you there quickly and easily—you can take the subway, bus, or Long Island Rail Road to reach some of the area's best beaches.

New York City beaches open for the summer on Memorial Day weekend. Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

New York City's Parks Department maintains city beaches. The National Park Service maintains beaches that are part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, such as Jacob Riis Park and Fort Tilden.

On Long Island, beaches are maintained by different agencies. Get more information.
