Carbon accounting

Updated Jun 9, 2026

The MTA publishes annual sustainability and emissions reports to provide transparency, track progress toward emissions reduction goals, and demonstrate the essential role transit plays in reducing regional greenhouse gas emissions. These reports document our progress towards our long‑term goal to cut operational emissions 85% by 2040, from a 2015 baseline. All emissions data undergoes a rigorous verification process to make sure it aligns with the five core principles of emissions reporting—relevance, completeness, consistency, transparency, and accuracy—resulting in a typical two-year lag time on published data.

Reports

Annual Sustainability Update: This report connects our emissions data to our broader climate strategy. It provides details on our climate sustainability vision, strategy to make transit even greener, and emissions sources and trends across the system.

Annual Sustainability Updates

The Climate Registry Verified Reports: The MTA reports emissions annually to The Climate Registry (TCR), a nonprofit that empowers organizations to report their progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The MTA is a founding member of TCR and has voluntarily reported greenhouse gas emissions with TCR since 2008.

Transit Agency Performance Metrics (TAPM): TAPM reports explain our emissions in relation to transit ridership and service levels. Metrics like emissions per passenger‑mile measure how efficiently we deliver service and how improved technologies and operations translate into emissions reductions.
